Aquatic Study

Background
The City conducted a public pool feasibility study in 1976. At the time of the study two public pools existed, one at Pullen Park and one at Chavis Park.  The recommendation from the study was for 8 pools to be developed in the first decade (to include one regional, year round indoor natatorium, 4 community outdoor pools and 3 neighborhood mini-swim facilities) and 13 additional pool facilities to be developed during the second decade.

Of the 21 facilities recommended, six of the currently existing eight facilities were constructed following the 1976 study. In 2004, the Raleigh Parks Plan (The Parks, Recreation, and Greenway Element of the City’s Comprehensive Plan adopted by City Council in May 2004), briefly addressed Public Swimming Pool Recommendations (pages 54 & 55)  and recommended a detailed comprehensive study.

This comprehensive Aquatic Study will include:
      • Current Status of Aquatic Programming
      • Assessment of Future Need

The first community meeting and four stakeholder group meetings were held the week of April 2nd. Here is a link to Counsilman Hunsaker's website (one of the consultants). [Clicking on this link will take you to a web page not directly affiliated with the City of Raleigh]. It includes the presentation given at these meetings.
