Skate Park
Citizen Advisory Council (CAC): Northeast
Background
Advocates in Raleigh successfully lobbied to have the design and construction of a skate park included as part of the 2003 Park Bond. City Council delayed funding the sale of bonds until appropriations would not require an increase in the property tax rate. Funds for the skate park were appropriated in July 2006 and included an increase due to higher material, construction, and energy costs. Public meetings were held in May, August and October 2007 to consult with the public and skating community on the site selection and design. Construction began in October 2008 and completed in April 2009.
Project Description
The Skate Park is located at Marsh Creek Community Park at 3016 New Hope Road. Park features include a flow bowl, a deep bowlwithover-vert clam shell, and a variety of street skating elements. Before skating, participants must sign a waiver. If skaters are under 18, the waiver must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. All skaters must wear a helmet and knee and elbow pads while skating.
Consultant Info
The City contracted with Stewart Engineering, Inc. for project planning, including selecting a site for the skate park. Stewart, in turn, subcontracted with Pillar Design Studios, LLC of Tempe, Arizona to lead the design work of the actual skating elements.
