Buffaloe Road Aquatics Center

3rd and Last Public Meeting!
July 20, 2009 @ 7:00 p.m.

Optimist Pool
5902 Whittier Drive, Raleigh

The design for the new Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center, Phase 1 is complete.  At the last public meeting in March, participants voiced their thoughts concerning various concepts for the proposed aquatic center.  Project architects and engineers have since formalized the final design concept in anticipation of beginning construction in the first quarter of 2010.  Please plan to attend our presentation of the new recreation and leisure pool facility.  The meeting will be held at the newly renovated Optimist Pool.

The 2007 CIP Bond Program allocated $8M for design, permitting, construction, and furnishings for this leisure pool facility.  Preparation of construction documents will take place over the course of the summer and fall of 2009 with advertisement for bids occurring in early 2010.  Construction is anticipated to start Spring 2010 with the facility opening Summer 2011.

Citizen Advisory Council (CAC) District: Northeast

Background

On January 22, 2008, the Raleigh City Council authorized the Parks and Recreation Department to move forward with a Master Plan Amendment process concerning Buffaloe Road Athletic Park.  The purpose of the amendment was to site a new regional aquatics facility in the Athletic Park . This action was recommended in the Comprehensive Aquatics Study report published in January 2008.

The Master Plan Amendment process included a public meeting held on May 15, 2008, during which comments concerning the proposed changes to the existing Master Plan were solicited.  The Amendment process also included review by the City’s Parks Recreation and Greenway Advisory Board, and final approval from the City Council on June 17, 2008.

The first public meeting concerning design was held on January 15, 2009.  Project architects presented the project history, results of the Buffaloe Road traffic study, and next steps for designing and constructing the recreation and leisure pool facility.  Participants voiced their preferences regarding play feature amenities and target ages.

The project team held a second public meeting on March 19, 2009, to present a number of proposed design concepts including building floor plans, pool schemes, and site plans.   Meeting attendees responded with their ideas and suggestions.

Transportation Improvements Update

Traffic Impact Analysis  (TIA) was prepared for Buffalo Road Athletic Park in August 2008. Proposed Buffaloe Road improvements are not currently funded but are included in the City’s long range plan for road improvements.
