Proposed 2007 Parks and Greenway Bond Referendum
Background
At the Jan. 23 City Council meeting, Mayor Meeker discussed potential for a 2007 parks and greenway bond initiative. Mayor Meeker suggested that the bond discussion be placed on the Feb. 6 agenda and he asked staff to make recommendations regarding what should be included in a parks and greenway bond in addition to items he noted.
Staff presented this information to the City Council at the Feb. 6 meeting. City Council requested that the Parks, Recreation and Greenway Advisory Board (PRGAB) review and provide comments to the City Council for their March 20 meeting.
At the Feb. 15 PRGAB meeting, the Board decided to hold a special meeting on March 1 to discuss the proposed bond in more detail and followed up discussions at the regularly scheduled PRGAB meeting held on March 15. PRGAB recommendations were made to City Council from the March 15 meeting.
On March 20, the Raleigh City Council decided to hold a public hearing on April 3 to receive citizens’ comments on a proposed bond issue for parks and greenway improvements.
Status
The Raleigh City Council voted unanimously May 15 to hold a referendum on a proposed $88.6 million bond issue for parks and greenway improvements. The bond package will appear on the Oct. 9 ballot.

- $16 million for greenway development;
- $15 million for park land acquisition;
- $4.9 million to expand the capacity of current facilities; and,
