MORDECAI HISTORIC PARK

As you begin to plan your field trips for the Spring and Fall semesters, remember Mordecai Historic Park! All Field trips will be Free this school year. Located one mile north of downtown Raleigh, Mordecai was once one of the largest plantations in the county. Mordecai is also home to the birthplace of Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, as well as a historic chapel, a law office, and an outdoor kitchen.

MORDECAI HISTORIC PARK SCHOOL PROGRAM

Students visiting Mordecai are encouraged to get involved in history by experimenting with artifacts, participating in interactive activities, making crafts to keep, and exploring the plantation house, grounds, and outbuildings. Educational tours are available Tuesday through Friday. Due to the rising cost of gas, all school trips will be FREE!Students participate in all the programs described below which meet NC-DPI curriculum goals.

Artifact Handler House Tour
On this guided tour, students will learn about the Mordecai Family and examine how families and life in North Carolina have changed over time. Students are invited to become "artifact handlers" by putting on white gloves and investigating select artifacts in the home. History Hike
Students tour our 1810 Law Office, 1847 Chapel, and the Birthplace of Andrew Johnson while learning how life has changed over time. In each building students participate in hands on activities which demonstrate how life was different for North Carolinians in the past.

Plantation Slavery
In the setting of the 1842 Allen Kitchen, once worked in a lived in by slaves, students will become aware of the different roles and tasks performed by slaves on the Mordecai Plantation. Students will then participate in a hands on activity.
