Rollapoolooza
The Adventure Program’s largest special event held annually in January, Rollapoolooza is an indoor, whitewater focused kayaking event that brings together some of the best paddlers in the southeast to help promote the sport. The even is a must make outing for people wanting to break into paddlesports, local paddlers, and for those wanting to meet and gain instruction from some of the best in paddle sports. Wilderness First Aid
You and a small group of friends are on a 3 mile hike to see a waterfall when John slips, falls, and twists his ankle. John can’t stand on his own and has several cuts from his fall...now what? Find out what to do in our intensive backcountry medical training course. The 16-hour, hands-on Wilderness First Aid course will cover ways to deal with many medical emergencies when dialing 911 might not be an option. Not only is this course informative, but the scenarios enacted are exciting and fun too! Wilderness First Aid has become the minimum standard of care for people who are responsible for others in the outdoors. Join the Adventure Program and Wilderness Medical Associates for a course aimed at our fellow outdoor enthusiasts, adventurers, and trip leaders. No prerequisites. The minimum age is for this course is 18 yrs.
Wilderness First Responder
Spend much time in the outdoors? Looking to gain more medical training before your next outdoor adventure? Wilderness First Responder is the next step in outdoor medicine and is designed for those working in an outdoor leadership role. This intensive eight day, 72-hour Wilderness Medical Associates course will show you how to make the critical decisions necessary for survival when medical help is not around. Wilderness Medical Associates instructors bring ample training and real-life experiences to help you see what emergencies could potentially occur in the outdoors and how to deal with them. The course includes classroom instruction and practical hands-on training. Learn to use only what you carried with you to make improvised litters, treat wounds, fractures, dislocations, and long-term patient care.
Neuse River Festival
The Neuse River Festival was a downriver canoe and kayak race running on the Neuse River annually from 1997-2007. The three and a half mile race was followed in the afternoon by an awards ceremony, games, entertainment, food and prizes. Thanks to all who made this event a success over the years!
Wilderness Survival Course
Learn the importance of always being prepared in the wilderness, how to cope with emergencies, how to lost-proof, and how to focus on safety during outdoor adventures. Professional hands on instruction is conducted by former US Air Force Survival Instructors from Global Principles. Instruction will include the following seven survival priorities: attitude, wilderness first aid, shelter, fire craft, signaling, water and food. This unique two-day course, with an overnight using tents, will provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to better cope in a wilderness environment, as well as build confidence to manage a wilderness survival situation. Recommended for ages 18 and older. Minimum age is 12. Ages 12-17 must be accompanied by a participating adult.
