2008 Sir Walter Raleigh Award Winners Announced


An “artful” pavilion, a hybrid community center and elementary school, an entire neighborhood of recycled homes, and a theater reborn are among the 2008 recipients of the City of Raleigh’s Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Community Appearance.
Twelve (12) award winners were recognized at a public ceremony on Monday, Sept. 8, at the new Raleigh Convention Center. The award winners were selected by an independent jury from a field of more than two dozen nominees. Recipients of the 2008 Sir Walter Raleigh Awards, grouped by category, are:
RESIDENTIAL
Barrington Village (Builders of Hope, Inc.) on Barrington Drive
Palladium Plaza in the 400 block of South Blount Street

HISTORIC PRESERVATION/ REHABILITATION
All Saints Chapel at 110 S. East St.
Burning Coal Theatre Company, 224 Polk St.
Coldwell Banker Occidental Building at 1001 Wade Ave.

INSTITUTIONAL
Brier Creek Elementary School & Community Center at 9801 Brier Creek Parkway

TREE AND LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION
MacNair’s Country Acres at 2721 Dover Farms Road

SITE ENHANCEMENT
Art as Shelter (North Carolina Museum of Art Park) at 2110 Blue Ridge Road
CREE Shimmer Wall (Raleigh Convention Center) at 500 Block of S. McDowell St.

The awards ceremony will include an address by “green building” pioneer Gail Lindsey. Ms. Lindsey has been instrumental in the creation and development of the national Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design high-performance building rating system. She will speak on "Being Green: The Nature of Nature."

The Sir Walter Raleigh Awards annually honor projects, groups, and individuals that have made a difference in improving the visual and natural environment of the City of Raleigh. To qualify, each must exhibit exemplary design, environmental stewardship, community involvement, preservation of natural features or historic resources, and/or exceeding city standards and statutes.
