Budget And Economic Development Committee To Review Art Proposal

The Raleigh City Council’s Budget and Economic Development Committee will review a proposal to establish a permanent public art initiative. The program, introduced at today’s Raleigh City Council meeting, recommends establishing a percent-for-art ordinance that would allocate half of one percent of expenditures of capital improvement municipal projects (involving public buildings, parks, and streetscapes) to the creation and development of public art.

Currently, there are 500 public art programs in the United States. Approximately 80 percent of these programs are supported by municipal governments. In North Carolina, there are five programs that operate under municipal percent for art ordinances.

The Budget and Economic Development Committee will meet on January 13 at 11 a.m. For more information on the proposed program, please contact the Raleigh Arts Commission office at 996-3610.
