City To Have Public Workshops On Draft Of Comp Plan Update
The City of Raleigh will hold three public workshops in January on the draft of the Comprehensive Plan update. The citywide public workshops will allow citizens to review the plan, ask questions and provide input.
The workshops will be held:
- Tuesday, Jan. 13 at Providence Baptist Church, 6339 Glenwood Avenue;
- Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Moore Square Magnet Middle School, 301 S. Person St.; and,
- Thursday, Jan. 15 at Church of God of Prophesy, 1200 S. State St.
Registration will begin at 6 p.m. at all three public workshops. The program and open house will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. All three public workshops will have the same program format, including a brief presentation followed by an open house. Summaries of key elements of the draft Comprehensive Plan update will be available. Important policy maps from the plan will be on display, including the new future land-use map. During the open house, City staff will be stationed at tables dedicated to one or more elements of the plan. The staff members will be available to answer questions and to collect input from attendees. The public’s input will be compiled for the public record.
The draft Comprehensive Plan update is the culmination of 18 months of work on the part of City staff and consultants. The plan provides the framework to guide Raleigh’s growth through 2030. It has a firm grounding in both data and analysis, represented by a 400-page community inventory report and an audit of more than 5,000 previously adopted policy, goal and action statements.
The draft Comprehensive Plan update can be viewed on the project website at www.planningraleigh2030.com. Print copies also are available for review at the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex, 222 W. Hargett St.; the Department of City Planning on the third floor of One Exchange Plaza (219 Fayetteville St.); the City’s Urban Design Center, Suite 100 at 133 Fayetteville St.; Chavis Community Center, 505 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd; and the nine Wake County public libraries located in Raleigh.
To register in advance for one or more of the three citywide public workshops on Jan. 13-15, visit the project website at www.planningraleigh2030.com. This website also contains additional meeting announcements and documents available for downloading, as well as the link to the special interactive website. Specific questions about the Comprehensive Plan update process can be directed to the Comprehensive Plan hotline at 516-2669, or emailed to info@planningraleigh2030.com. All queries will be answered within 24 hours.
If you cannot attend one of the three public workshops, the City will have two public briefings on the draft Comprehensive Plan update. The public briefings will be held Jan. 8 and Jan. 22 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Raleigh Urban Design Center, located at 133 Fayetteville St. at the Hargett Street intersection. The public briefings will include a question-and-answer session. Unlike the citywide public workshops, public input on the draft Comprehensive Plan update will not be collected at the public briefings.
The City has established a special interactive website that allows anyone with an internet connection to comment on every policy and action statement in the draft Comprehensive Plan update. Comments will be accepted in any form that citizens may wish to use, from letters to phone calls to the interactive website, which can be accessed via www.planningraleigh2030.com. The comment period is open through Jan. 31.
In March, a finalized draft of the Comprehensive Plan update will be presented to the City Council for its consideration.
In compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act, the City of Raleigh honors requests for accommodations at public meetings for individuals with disabilities. Requests can be served most effectively when notice is provided at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting. To request special accommodations, call the City of Raleigh Public Affairs Department at 996-3107 (TDD) or 996-3100 (voice).
