City To Hold Public Workshops On Draft Of Comp Plan Update

The City of Raleigh will have three public workshops in January on the draft of the Comprehensive Plan update. The citywide workshops will allow citizens to review the plan, ask questions and provide comments.

The draft Comprehensive Plan update will be officially released on Dec. 1 on the project website at www.planningraleigh2030.com. Print copies will be available for review at the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex, 222 W. Hargett St.; the Department of City Planning on the third floor of One Exchange Plaza (219 Fayetteville St.); the City’s Urban Design Center, Suite 100 at 133 Fayetteville St.; Chavis Community Center, 505 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd; and the nine Wake County public libraries located in Raleigh.

The City will have a rollout of the Comprehensive Plan update and an open house on Wednesday, Dec. 3 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Raleigh Convention Center. Raleigh residents are invited to attend this public event. Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m., and copies of the plan will be made available. The program will include short presentations and an open house.  Attendees will have an opportunity to meet and talk with members of the City Council, Planning Commission, City Planning staff, and other City boards and commissions. The project consultants also will be in attendance. Summaries of key elements of the draft Comprehensive Plan update will be available. Important policy maps from the plan will be on display, including a new Future Land Use Map.

Residents will be given another opportunity to become acquainted with the draft Comprehensive Plan update by attending one or more of the final three public workshops. The citywide workshops will be held in January on the following dates and locations:

  • Tuesday, Jan. 13 at Providence Baptist Church, 6339 Glenwood Avenue;
  • Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Moore Square Magnet Middle School, 301 S. Person St.; and,
  • Thursday, Jan. 15 at Church of God of Prophesy, 1200 S. State St.

Registration will begin at 6 p.m. at all three public citywide workshops. A program and open house will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. All three workshops will have the same program format. They will include a brief presentation followed by an open house. Summaries of key elements of the draft Comprehensive Plan update will be available. Important policy maps from the plan will be on display, including a new future land use map.  During the open house, experts will answer questions at tables dedicated to one or more elements of the plan. Comments from attendees will be collected and compiled for the public record.

Beginning on Dec. 1, a special interactive website will be made available to allow anyone with an internet connection to comment on every policy and action statement in the draft Comprehensive Plan update. Comments will be accepted in any form that citizens may wish to use, from letters to phone calls to the interactive website, which can be accessed via www.planningraleigh2030.com. The comment period will be open from Dec. 1 through Jan. 31, 2009.

The draft Comprehensive Plan update will be the culmination of 18 months of work on the part of City Staff and consultants. The plan will provide the framework to guide Raleigh’s growth through 2030.  It has a firm grounding in both in data and analysis, represented by a 400-page community inventory report and an audit of over 5,000 previously adopted policy, goal and action statements.

The draft Comprehensive Plan update has an expanded scope but is substantially simpler than the current plan.  It includes new elements that address land use, environmental protection, urban design, arts and culture, regional coordination and implementation. The draft Comprehensive Plan update must be approved by the City Council.

To register in advance for the Dec. 3 draft Comprehensive Plan update rollout and open house or for one or more of the three citywide public workshops on Jan. 13-15, visit the project website at www.planningraleigh2030.com.
