Mayor Meeker Promotes Awareness Of Weatherization Program

It’s that time of year; Raleigh residents are turning up their thermostats to cozy-up their quarters.  Mayor Charles Meeker today joined with Resources for Seniors to promote a federally funded program that looks to assure that no one is left out in the cold.

Mayor Meeker joined with Dave Cottengim, president of Resources for Seniors, and several other Wake County mayors at the home of Mrs. Lulu Joyner in observance of Weatherization Awareness Day in Wake County. Mrs. Joyner’s home is up for weatherization.

The U.S. Department of Energy Weatherization Assistance Program works with state and local partners to reduce the energy burden on persons with extremely low incomes by installing cost-effective, energy-efficient measures.

The Wake County Weatherization Program prioritizes service to the elderly, persons with disabilities and households with children. Families and individuals eligible to receive weatherization services are those with incomes below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Qualifying households can use up to $6,500 for energy efficiency upgrades to their home. These households save an average of $413 annually on heating costs after the weatherization improvements have been completed.

Resources for Seniors, a Wake County-based non profit organization, will weatherize more than 900 homes in Wake County by March 2012.  For more information, call Resources for Seniors at 872-7933 or visit http://www.resourcesforseniors.com/index.php.
