Raleigh Fire Station Hosting Open House To See Historic Fire Bell
The City of Raleigh Fire Department will be hosting an open house on the weekends of Nov. 21-23 and Dec. 5-7 at Fire Station 1 for residents wishing to see the historic fire bell which was recently returned to the City’s possession.
Originally cast in 1870, the 1000-pound bronze bell was used to alert the City’s volunteer fire force. During the 1940s, the bell was moved to North Carolina State University’s Withers Hall. On Tuesday, Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker and university Chancellor Dr. James Oblinger signed an agreement (link to video) that transferred the bell back into the City’s custody. The bell is the oldest relic of the Raleigh Fire Department. After cleaning and restoration, the bell may be placed in the $226 million public safety building on which construction is to begin next year.
Residents are invited to visit Fire Station 1 over the next two weekends and see the bell. Raleigh firefighters will be available to host visitors. Station 1 is located at 220 South Dawson Street.
