Raleigh Rewards Responsible Recycling With "Recycle And Win"

If you live in Raleigh, you just got even luckier! Starting Nov. 3, you will have a chance to be rewarded – just for doing the right thing.

The City of Raleigh, North Carolina-based Coca-Cola Consolidated, Harris Teeter and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance (DPPEA) today announced a partnership designed to increase recycling throughout the Capital City. “Recycle and Win” is a public/private initiative designed to educate citizens on the right way to recycle and encourage them to do so.

The program kicks off Nov. 3 and will run for six months. The City is sending an educational mailer from Coca-Cola to all single-family households in Raleigh.  The mailer features the right ways and the wrong ways of recycling, along with an opportunity to win a $50 Harris Teeter gift card simply for doing the right things – recycling and recycling the right way. The educational mailer contains a sticker, which residents should place on their green City of Raleigh recycling bins in order to win. If they are spotted recycling the right way, they could be rewarded.

Coca-Cola is lending the City a Prius for staff to use for the “Recycle and Win” prize patrol. The prize patrol in the “Recycle and Win” car will be visiting Raleigh neighborhoods in search of recycling bins correctly filled and placed on the curbside awaiting collection. The prize patrol plans to award 10 $50 Harris Teeter gift cards each week throughout the six-month campaign; for a total of 260 prizes.

In announcing the program at a media conference held in front of the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts, Mayor Charles Meeker called “Recycle and Win” an exciting partnership that can really make a difference in reducing the amount of waste material going to landfills. “As our community continues to grow, we need innovative solutions such as the ‘Recycle and Win’ program to promote environmental sustainability,” he said. “This helps the environment and saves tax dollars as well.”

“The beauty of this program is its simplicity,” Fred Battle, director of the City’s Solid Waste Services Department said during the media conference. “All the public has to do is place the weather-resistant sticker provided by Coca-Cola on their recycling bin, recycle materials properly and place the recycling bin with the sticker facing the street. If the Coca-Cola Recycling Prize Patrol spots their stickered bin, they could win a $50 Harris Teeter gift card.”

“Initiatives such as ‘Recycle and Win’ are very important to our efforts to grow the North Carolina recycling economy to create jobs around the recovery of materials,” said Scott Mouw, DPPEA’s recycling director. “We are excited to see this program develop and want to recognize Coca-Cola, Harris Teeter and the City of Raleigh for their leadership.”  DPPEA provided the base for the “Recycle and Win” program with a $10,000 grant.

“Coca-Cola is proud to sponsor this exciting initiative,” said Lauren Steele, vice president of corporate affairs for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. “We want to make recycling a rewarding experience, and what better way to encourage people to recycle than by giving them an opportunity win. This fits well with Coca-Cola’s Live Positively platform.

“With so many people moving to Raleigh over the last 10 years,” he said, it is necessary to educate new residents and remind all the others how to recycle properly.”

“Rewards like ‘Recycle and Win’ are instrumental in building positive recycling habits and are just a part of our efforts to promote recycling,” said Rod Antolock, executive vice president of operations and merchandising for Harris Teeter. “We recently installed recycling bins in the lobby of each of our stores designated for bottles and cans. These bins are in addition to the plastic and paper bag recycling bins currently in each Harris Teeter store. Now, if a customer enjoys a bottle or canned beverage during a shopping trip, we encourage them to take advantage of our new in-store recycling program.”
