To be a winner of a $50 Harris Teeter gift card, you must follow the correct procedures. The following are the “right ways” to recycle in Raleigh. The following items are accepted for recycling:
Glass food and beverage containers;
Food and beverage cans;
Aluminum foil and trays;
Plastic bottles;
Plastic beverage rings;
Gable-top cartons;
Aseptic drink boxes;
Newspapers and all inserts;
Magazines and catalogs;
White paper, including junk mail;
Corrugated cardboard pieces no larger than 3’ X 3’; and,
Paperboard, chipboard and paper tubes.
Raleigh collects curbside recycling once a week on the same day as
resident’s garbage and yard waste are picked up. Recycling bins should be placed at curbside (not in the street) by 7 a.m. on the assigned collection day. (During the “Recycle and Win” campaign, make sure the program’s sticker is facing the street.)
The following are items that are not to be placed in your Raleigh recycling bin:
Non-bottle shaped plastic items such as yogurt cups, margarine tubs and deli trays;
Pizza boxes or other contaminated paper products;
Styrofoam;
Non-food glass products such as ceramic cups, vases, mirrors and light bulbs;
Plastic bags (not even to put extra recyclables in);
Books, including telephone books;
Tissue, napkins or paper towels; and,
Scrap metal or small appliances.
To obtain a new recycling bin, contact the City of Raleigh’s Solid Waste Services Department at 996-6890. Residents who have physical challenges that prevent them from recycling should call Solid Waste Services at 996-6890 to receive assistance.
Nearly 70 percent of Raleigh single-family residences participated in the City of Raleigh’s 20-year-old recycling program in the past year, diverting 21,700 tons from the landfill.
