CAT Ridership Hits All-Time Peak

With gas prices hovering near $4 per gallon, the number of riders on Capital Area Transit (CAT) buses continues to rise. During the month of July, CAT totaled more than 422,000 passenger trips, exceeding any single month of ridership recorded by CAT in recent decades.

“July’s total represents a 24 percent increase in ridership over the totals for July of 2007 and a 6.4 percent increase in ridership from June of 2008,” said David Eatman, City of Raleigh Transit Administrator. “The high cost of gas and the general increase in all commodities are boosting transit ridership across the country. We’re pleased that people are taking advantage of what we can offer them.”

With 26 fixed routes and one express route, the majority of the City of Raleigh is accessible through CAT.

CAT buses also are equipped with racks for bicycles. To become familiar with the CAT system, visit www.raleighnc.gov/transit or the Triangle’s regional transit Web site at www.gotriangle.org. The trip planner on the regional transit site allows residents to put in a location and a destination and receive step-by-step directions for getting around the Triangle, including bus stop locations, route numbers and the time length of the trip.

For more information on CAT service, call the GoTriangle Regional Call Center at 485-RIDE.
