City Acquires Two Electric Cars

The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department has acquired two electric cars, continuing the City’s commitment to using alternative fuel vehicles in order to reduce automobile emissions and improve air quality.

The two electric cars are assigned to the operations staff at the City’s Neuse River Wastewater Treatment Plant (NRWWTP). The staff uses the cars to drive around the plant’s massive complex to check equipment and process parameters, said T.J. Lynch, wastewater treatment superintendent.

The electric cars are battery operated, similar to electric golf carts, and are recharged as needed. The operations staff at NRWWTP had been using electric golf carts to motor around the plant but found the electric cars to be “a better fit,” Mr. Lynch said. The two electric cars cost the City $11,000 each. They replaced two gasoline-powered pickup trucks.

The City of Raleigh has used alternative fuel vehicles in its fleet of automobiles for at least the past eight years. The City has a total of 396 such vehicles, including five small utility electric vehicles. The other alternative fuel vehicles are powered by compressed natural gas, E85 ethanol, or biodiesel fuel, or are hybrids.
