City Public Utilities Department Honored For Public Education Video
At a recent National Association of Clean Water Agencies conference in Cleveland, the City of Raleigh was presented the 2007 National Environmental Achievement Award for a public education video offering a virtual tour of the Neuse River Waste Water Treatment Plant (NRWWTP).
The video, commissioned by the City and produced by the environmental engineering firm Hazen and Sawyer, won for the public information and education – video program category. The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department was one of 12 agencies honored during the conference. The video was created in order to provide middle school students a better understanding of how the City converts wastewater back into useable water at the NRWWTP, before returning it to the Neuse River. In the video “Neusie - the City’s resident spokesfish” conducts the virtual tour through the various treatment processes at the NRWWTP.
“We’re deeply honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award and very appreciative of our creative staff in Public Utilities which came up with the idea of ‘Neusie’ conducting a virtual tour of the Neuse River WWTP and our friends at H&S that made it happen,” said Dale Crisp, director of Public Utilities for the City of Raleigh. “Hazen and Sawyer did an outstanding job producing the video and were extremely generous in donating their staff’s time and materials for production of the video at no cost to the City. This project was the primarily the brainchild of T.J. Lynch, our wastewater treatment superintendent. The video was truly a great concept and premiered at Waterfest 2006. The NRWWTP virtual tour video was very well received by everyone that has seen it and was shown again this year at Waterfest 2007.”
Mr. Crisp also indicated a similar virtual tour video has been produced this year for the E.M. Johnson Water Treatment Plant and that both educational videos will soon be posted on the City’s Raleigh Television Network web page in the “on-demand” video library for anyone to view at their leisure that have web access.
