Council Approves Community Enhancement Grants

Preventing blight is always daunting; but during times of economic strife, it is especially difficult. At the June 16 Raleigh City Council meeting, the Council agreed to increase its allotment for Community Development Block Grant community enhancement projects to nearly $280,000. In recent years, the City had allocated $175,000 to $250,000 to non-profit and faith-based service organizations working on these issues.

The Council approved seven grants for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. The organizations receiving the grants will be:

  • YWCA Hargett Street - $30,400 to support its economic empowerment program. The effort will provide job training and money management skills for adults with low or moderate incomes;
  • Triangle Family Services - $52,450 for programs that help children with emotional or behavioral problems and children at risk of being homeless;
  • Urban Ministries Women Shelter - $37,500 to replace the 20-year-old roof of the Helen Wright Center for Women;
  • Communities In Schools of Wake County - $10,000 to support a comprehensive youth training after-school programs;
  • YMCA Garner Road - $75,000 for scholarships to elementary and middle school children in surrounding neighborhoods in an effort to improve their academics, instill leadership characteristics and to provide a safe environment;
  • Pullen/Hope Center Job R. and Wiley Partnership - $55,790 to provide job training and job referrals to adults who are homeless and to provide educational support for children who are homeless; and,
  • Wake Tech Greener Way to Work and Live - $18,800 to offer agricultural and horticultural training to students with disabilities in low-income neighborhoods.
