Council Approves Richland Creek Watershed Rezoning
The Raleigh City Council voted unanimously at its Nov. 4 meeting to rezone approximately 5,000 acres in the Richland Creek watershed. The rezoning places the property in an urban water supply watershed protection area overlay.
The 5,000 acres are located north of Durant Road and are generally bounded by Durant Road, Falls of Neuse Road, the future N.C. 98 Bypass and Capital Boulevard. Wakefield, Falls River and Bedford are among the subdivisions in the affected area.
The State of North Carolina ordered the City of Raleigh to enact the Richland Creek watershed protection rules in response to a request by the Town of Wake Forest to reclassify a portion of the Neuse River as a future water source. Last month, the City Council approved an ordinance that imposes the minimum development rules required by the State for the watershed. As a result, most property owners in the watershed will not be impacted by these new rules. The City has sent letters about the rezoning to homeowners and other property owners in the watershed.
