New Art-On-The-Move Designs Selected For CAT Buses

The City of Raleigh Arts Commission, in partnership with Capital Area Transit (CAT), has selected 12 original designs by local artists for the second round of the City’s public art project, ART-ON-THE-MOVE.

ART-ON-THE-MOVE places original art on the sides of 12 CAT buses for a period of six months. The first ART-ON-THE-MOVE CAT buses were unveiled in September 2007. The latest designs will be officially revealed in May. All artwork submissions were reviewed by a panel comprised of community members, Arts Commission and CAT representatives. Final selections were recommended by the review panel, and approved by the Arts Commission and the Raleigh Transit Authority.

The 12 selected artists are Nancy Baker, Samuel Cox, Bart Cusick, Patrick FitzGerald, Paul Friedrich, Suzanne Kratzer, Anna Podris, Ian Sands, Amy Sawyer, Pat Scull, a partnership of Tonic Design and Gail Peter Borden, and Kaci Torres. These artists have created a virtual art gallery on wheels with imaginative designs, including a surreal forest landscape, comical flying clocks, giraffes playing next to swinging stoplights, and a 360-degree view of riders on a bus.

The CAT buses wrapped with the art designs will be officially unveiled on Saturday, May 16 at 11 a.m. in Moore Square Park downtown as part of the Artsplosure outdoor festival. Dignitaries and artists will be in attendance for the bus “christening.” The public will be able to view some of the buses from 11 a.m. to noon on May 16.

“This is a great project for the city,” said Brian Starkey, chair of the Arts Commission. “One of the Arts Commission’s key goals is to increase opportunities for Raleigh citizens to engage in the arts -- and definitely, ART-ON-THE-MOVE will help accomplish this.”

Chapel Hill Public Art Administrator Jeffrey York, a member of the 2007 ART-ON-THE-MOVE review panel, said the CAT buses emblazoned with the art designs will be “illustrating a diverse pallet of experiences that lend Raleigh its identity.  I am sure residents and visitors alike will enjoy the moving visual feast.”

City of Raleigh Transit Administrator David Eatman said, “We are excited about the opportunity to work with the Raleigh Arts Commission on our second ART-ON-THE-MOVE project. The first project was very successful. It showcased the talents of local artists while raising awareness about public transportation in our Capital City. I feel confident that this project will be even more successful than the first.”

Established in 1977 as the official advisory body and advocate for the arts to the Raleigh City Council, the City of Raleigh Arts Commission holds the distinction of being the first municipal arts commission created in North Carolina. Serving as the leading force to champion the arts with Raleigh citizens and their representatives, the Arts Commission’s myriad activities foster, support, and promote the arts in the Capital City.
