Solar Array Project At Water Treatment Plant Proceeds

The Raleigh City Council has approved the site plan for the solar array project at the E.M. Johnson Water Treatment Plant on Falls of Neuse Road.

Because this is a power plant relying on solar energy and located within a residential zoning district, Planning Commission and City Council approvals of the site plan were required. The site is zoned rural residential with secondary watershed protection overlay district.

On Oct. 8, the Raleigh City Council unanimously approved installation of a 250-kilowatt solar photovoltaic array on the roof of the clearwell building at the City’s E.M. Johnson Water Treatment Plant in north Raleigh. City staff was authorized to negotiate a lease with Carolina Solar Energy, which is contracted with Progress Energy Carolinas to develop the solar-generated electricity system.

The solar photovoltaic array planned for the water treatment plant reaffirms the City of Raleigh’s commitment as a leader in the region in sustainability. The project is expected to be the first of its size and type for any local government in the state of North Carolina, and the first at a water treatment plant in the state.
