Water Conservation The Key Theme Of WaterFest 2008
To commemorate National Drinking Water Week, the City of Raleigh will be hosting its 13th annual WaterFest May 6-8 at the E.M. Johnson Water Treatment Plant, located at 10301 Falls of Neuse Road. WaterFest is a water festival for children. Activities will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. all three days.
The purpose of WaterFest is to educate the public about water as a precious resource and the importance of taking care of our water. After experiencing the worst drought in North Carolina history, much of the information at this year’s WaterFest will focus on water conservation and using water wisely. More than 30 different booths and activities are planned, including demonstrations of various aspects of the water treatment process, resource protection and drought preparedness, laboratory experiments, City of Raleigh Fire Department trucks, equipment demonstrations, hayrides, conservation tips and other activities. Additionally, programs and agencies such as Adopt-A-Stream, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will be represented.
About 3,400 Wake County schoolchildren in kindergarten through eighth grade are scheduled to attend WaterFest. The general public is also invited to take part. Admission is free. For more information about WaterFest or if you would like to be a volunteer, contact Marti Gibson at the City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, 250-7826.
