Join Us In September For Take A Child Outside Week!


Take a Child Outside Week - Birding Buddies
Bring the whole family out for a morning full of feathery fun! Everyone will have a chance to learn more about the colorful singers we call birds. After getting to know more about these fantastic fliers, we'll head outside to look for them around the center. This program will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Barwell Road Community Center from 10:30-11:30 am. The cost is $3 for each person and pre-registration is required four days prior to the event. For more information, contact Nature Programs at 919-831-6640.

Take a Child Outside Week - Family Night Exploration
As the sun sets, the woods come alive. Adults and children alike will enjoy this hike in search of nocturnal animals. Come listen for frogs and owls and search for bats and moths. We'll explore the adaptations that help these creatures survive at night. This program will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Lake Johnson Park from 7:30-8:30 pm. Take a Child Outside Week - Eco-challenge: Family Trailblazers
Your family will tackle this challenge together! All teams must have at least one adult and each member should register and pay the fee. Learn how to find your way with maps, compasses, and trailblazing signs in order to find the hidden coins that we have placed. Come ready to hike and explore. This program will be held at Lake Lynn Community Center on Sunday, September 21, 2008 from 3:00-4:30 pm. Take a Child Outside Week - Pond Exploration
An evening of aquatic fun is waiting for your whole family. Help us explore the pond in search of all the amazing critters that live in it. We will use nets and fishing poles to catch insects, amphibians, and fish for a closer look before returning them to their home in the water. This program will be held at Powell Drive Park on September 22, 2008 from 6:00-7:00 pm. The cost is $3 for each person and pre-registration is required four days prior to the event.  For more information, contact Nature Programs at 919-831-6640.

Take a Child Outside Week - Family Paddle
Nature Programs has teamed up with the staff at Shelley Lake to offer this fun opportunity to get out on the lake. The cost of the rentals will be $4/hour/boat. Only register one person for each boat desired. At least one participant on each canoe must be 18 years of age or older. For more information, contact Nature Programs at 919-831-6640.

Take a Child Outside Week - Night Lights
Bring your family out to watch the lights of night in action. We'll learn all about lightning bugs through observations and a game. Then we'll create a cute 'night light' of our own to take home. This program will be held on September 25, 2008 at Barwell Road Community Center from 7:00-8:00 pm. Take a Child Outside Week - Lake Wheeler Family Campout
Families gather to form a group and experience an overnight complete with a naturalist led hike, cook-out deserts, and a light breakfast. Bring a tent, sleeping bags, and pillow for a night under the stars. This program will be held at Lake Wheeler Park on September 26-27, 2008 from 6:00pm Friday to 12:00 noon on Saturday. The cost is $12 per adult and $6 per youth. Program fee applies to each person and pre-registration is required four days prior to the event.
