New Carousel Music for Pullen and Chavis

This week we are featuring two new Band Organ Rolls to be played at each Carousel! At Pullen Park, the Wurlitzer Band Organ will be sounding off Patriotic tunes. The Chavis Carousel Wurlitzer organ will play new children's favorites such as Zip-a-dee-Doo-Dah, It's a Small World, and Puff the Magic Dragon.

Pullen Park had its first steam driven "merry-go-round" in the summer of 1915. In the fall of 1920, the City Board purchased the current carousel and building from Bloomsbury Park. Repaired and repainted the carousel was ready to ride on Easter Monday in 1921.  This Dentzel Carousel is three-abreast, stationary and galloping menagerie machine. Music is provided by the Wurlitzer 125 Military Band Organ. The band organ dates back from 1900 to 1924. According to the National Carousel Association Census, this is one of 23 remaining historic Dentzel carousels and one of 14 Dentzel menageries still operating in Northern America.  Pullen Park is located at 520 Ashe Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27606.

Chavis Park has been home to the No. 2 Special Three Abreast Allan Herschell Carousel since 1937. It was purchased from the Allan Herschell Company. This carousel was refurbished before it was sold to the City of Raleigh. Therefore, this carousel possibly dates from 1923 or earlier and probably traveled before it was located here. The band organ is a Wurlitzer 146A with an ornately carved and decorated façade.  Chavis Carousel is located at 505 MLK Jr. Boulevard, Raleigh, NC 27601
