Council Committee To Study Chavis Park Issues
A petition with more than 1,000 signatures was presented to the Raleigh City Council asking the City to keep the historic Chavis Park carousel near its current location. Lonnette Williams, chair of the Central Citizens Advisory Council, submitted the petition at the council’s evening session on Dec. 2.
A revised master plan for Chavis Park that was adopted by the City Council in 1994 recommends the carousel be moved to a new building closer to the center of the park near what is now Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, a location where it would be more visible. The recommendation was never formally acted on, and in 2003 the City’s Carousel Task Force issued a report in support of moving the carousel.
The petition presented to the City Council seeks to halt any plans to move the carousel. It also asks for “broad-based public input” for the historic preservation and restoration of Chavis Park as a regional park with new facilities and activities. The City Council directed its Comprehensive Planning Committee to study Chavis Park issues and make a recommendation for council members to consider.
