Wetland Plantings Installed At Fred Fletcher Park Water Garden

The City of Raleigh’s contractor on the new water garden and wetland area at Fred Fletcher Park has completed installing wetland plantings for the project. This is a milestone in completion of the project. The contractor is Fluvial Solutions Inc.

The water garden and wetland feature were incorporated into the park’s master plan several years ago. The water garden is located behind the existing basketball and tennis courts, near the park’s entrance on Washington Street. Construction of the project began in March.

When complete, the water garden will offer several benefits to park patrons and to the City, including:

  • An aesthetically pleasing garden with a variety of evergreen and perennial plant species;
  • A new ecosystem in this area of the park for butterflies, dragonflies, frogs, and other animal species;
  • Naturally filtered stormwater that flows into the water garden to clean the runoff before flowing downstream into Pigeon House Branch; and
  • An educational opportunity for neighboring schools and park patrons on the new habitat and the functions of the water garden.

In addition to the construction of the water garden, the City is nearing completion of additional improvements at Fletcher Park, including constructing a pedestrian entrance off of Boylan Avenue, addressing erosion on the grass slope below Boylan Avenue, and continuing the asphalt path that previously ended at the footbridge behind the basketball courts.

The new water garden is scheduled to be opened to the public later this summer.
