The Appearance Commission was established by City Council in 1973 to provide guidance, advice and recommendations regarding the visual quality and aesthetic characteristics of the City of Raleigh. The commission consists of 15 members, the majority of whom have special training or experience in architecture, landscape architecture, horticulture, city planning, or related design fields.
The commission meets on the third Thursday of the month at 5:30 pm in the Raleigh Municipal Building, 222 West Hargett Street in Room 305.
The principal work of the commission is carried out under the direction of two standing committees:
The Development Review Committee reviews site plans of major development projects and coordinates commission review of rezoning applications which have site plan components, issuing design recommendations based on the city's appearance and environmental statutes. It also develops procedural recommendations for the encouragement of good design practices. The committee meets on the first and third Tuesdays of every month. All meetings begin at 4:00 PM, in the One Exchange Plaza Building in Suite 809
The Strategic/ Outreach Committee is responsible for communicating the activities and recommendations of the commission to the public, and for encouraging community interest and involvement in city appearance matters. Among the committee's major efforts is the annual Sir Walter Raleigh Awards program, recognizing outstanding achievement in local design and appearance. The committee is also engaged in the collection and study of data, legislation, and procedures that pertain to community appearance and the visual environment, and preparing recommendations and proposals to the City Council concerning them. In addition, the committee serves as a coordinating body with other boards and agencies toward the general betterment of the visual aspects of the City. The committee meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 4:30 pm in the Raleigh Municipal Building in Room 303
Commission and committee meetings are open to the public. Note that meetings can be subject to change, following public notice of at least 48 hours. Minutes of past meetings and the most recent meeting agenda are available from this web page (see upper right).
