Volunteer Opportunities

Make a difference in the community with the ESL Program

Last Modified: April 20, 2012

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program offers a variety of ways for people to volunteer. Note that for all volunteer opportunities knowledge of a language other than English is NOT necessary.

ESL Volunteers

Duties include assisting the ESL Staff at various events throughout the city of Raleigh. Volunteers may be asked to help run informational booths and work directly with patrons, or they might assist the staff at special citywide events, such as July 4th Celebration, festivals, concerts, and more.

ESL Volunteer Instructors & Assistants

The ESL Program is always recruiting experienced or certified ESL teachers to lead the free ESL classes offered through the city. We ask that volunteers, after going through a two-night orientation, commit to teaching at least one six-week session with our program. Within the six-week session, volunteers devote 1.5 hours one night per week to teaching people basic English skills.

If someone would like to teach an ESL class, but they do not have any previous experience or certification, we ask that they first serve as an assistant instructor. Volunteer assistant instructors gain on-the-job training by observing and helping the Volunteer Instructor.
