Raleigh Street Improvement Project Information

Capital Improvement Program Projects (CIP) these projects are generally along high volume roadways and are part of the City’s long-term planning process and a bridge between the City’s Comprehensive Plan and short-term planning for infrastructure. The Design and Construction Division is responsible for new street improvements and streetscape CIP projects.

Construction Updates:

Buck Jones Road Widening Project: Project Updated, Nov. 29
A new traffic pattern is in place between Bashford Road and Barclay Drive, and the City’s contractor is installing the second half of the new box culvert that runs under Buck Jones Road.

Mitchell Mill Road Widening: Project Updated, Nov. 29
The contractor installed the first section of the new box culvert at the intersection of Forestville Road and is scheduled to start the installation of the second half of the culvert at the beginning of the new year. Forestville Road at the intersection of Mitchell Mill Road is required to be closed while the second half of the culvert is installed. The City will send out more details as the new year approaches.

Hillsborough Street Renewal Project: Project Updated, Nov. 29
The contractor continues installing the new storm drain system between Daisy Street and Dixie Trail and work on the roundabout at Shepherd Street and Rosemary Street continues.

Pullen Road Extension Project: Project Updated, Nov. 29

The City’s currently installing tree protection and erosion control and clearing activity is scheduled to begin shortly.

Blue Ridge Road Widening Project

The project will widen a segment of Blue Ridge Road from Duraleigh Road to Crabtree Valley Avenue to three lanes with curb and gutter, sidewalks on both sides of the roadway, and bicycle lanes.

A public meeting was held on Monday, Aug. 28, at the Thomas G Crowder Woodland Center. The City’s consultant Dewberry shared the proposed improvements to Lorimer Road, and City staff was available after the presentation to answer individual questions from property owners along the corridor.

Pullen Road

This project will extend Pullen Road from Western Blvd to Centennial Pkwy as a 52-feet from back-of-curb to back-of-curb roadway with bike lanes, medians, a 6-foot sidewalk on the east side, a 10-foot multiuse path on the west side, street trees and street lights on both sides as well as a 12 inch water main installation.

Scotland Street Improvement Project

Proposed improvements will include widening the road, extending curb and gutter along the entire length of the project, installing sidewalk along the north side, and installing sidewalk on the south side from Lakeview Drive to St. Marys Street.

The proposed improvements extend from Beaufort Street to Lassiter Mill Road/St. Marys Street.

Project Location

Tryon Road Widening Project

This project will widen and rehabilitate Tryon Road between Lake Wheeler Road and Par Drive, connecting with the previously widened sections. The improved corridor will feature a 4-lane, divided curb and gutter roadway with turn lanes, sidewalks, and bike lanes.

Project Location

Petition Projects are neighborhood streets projects initiated by property owners through the Street Improvement Petition Program. Improvements may include paving of gravel streets, the addition of curbs and gutters or resurfacing of streets that do not have curbs and gutters. Upon completion, a portion of the project cost is passed to the abutting property owners in the form of an assessment.

Project Location

Traffic Calming Projects are projects that the Neighborhood Streetscape Program has passed onto our department for engineering services and construction management.

The goal of the Neighborhood Streetscape Program is to improve street safety for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists while improving the living conditions for residents along a street. Treatments to the street enhance the appearance and slow down motor-vehicle traffic.

Cross Links Traffic Calming Project: The 25 percent staff review meeting was held on September 28, and currently, our engineers are addressing staff review comments as we advance the design towards the next phase of 65 percent plan review.

This project includes the installation of traffic calming devices along Cross Links Road from Dandridge Drive to Garner Road, sidewalk construction on the southeast side and bike and transit improvements to the street.
