Raleigh to Seek TIGER Grant for Union Station

The City of Raleigh is applying for a federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) V grant to complete Phase I of the Union Station project. The City Council voted unanimously today to authorize City staff to apply for the grant.

Renovation of the Dillon Viaduct Building at 510 W. Martin Street in Downtown is the first phase of construction of the Raleigh Union Station project. If awarded, the City would use the TIGER V grant to fund completion of the train station and site, rail and street improvements.

TIGER grant funds require a 20 percent local match. The match for the grant would come from funds the City has already allocated to the Union Station project.

Last June, the City of Raleigh awarded $21 million in TIGER IV funds for Phase I of the Union Station project. The TIGER V funds would supplement the Tiger IV grant award and allow additional building and site improvements to support the renovation of the Dillon Viaduct Building into a passenger rail facility.

The City of Raleigh is partnering with the Federal Railroad Administration, North Carolina Department of Transportation and the Triangle Transit Authority on the Union Station project.

Raleigh's existing Amtrak Station on Cabarrus Street can no longer adequately serve an increasing number of rail passengers and must be replaced with a larger facility. Raleigh's planned Union Station would be a hub connecting the city's multiple transportation modes. This includes Capital Area Transit bus service; Triangle Transit's regional bus service; long-distance bus service (Greyhound); Amtrak rail service; the Silver Star, Carolinian and Piedmont rail services; and future local and regional rail transit, such high-speed rail services.
