Raleigh is a Nationally Certified 4-STAR Community
Raleigh is a certificated 4-STAR community, and the first community in North Carolina to achieve certification through the national STAR Community Rating System (STAR) for excellence in sustainability. STAR is a robust sustainability rating system where communities evaluate themselves across seven goal areas: built environment; climate and energy; economy and jobs; education, arts and community; equity and empowerment; health and safety; and natural systems.STAR presentation video
The presence of agriculture in the urban environment positively affects the natural environment, the local economy, social relations and household economic behavior, all of which contribute to the livability of the city.
The Environmental Advisory Board hosted a panel discussion November 14, 2016 at Alliance Medical Ministry to recognize the work of 13 local gardens and farms receiving urban agriculture “mini-grants” at the 2015 Environmental Awards Ceremony as well as to advance Raleigh’s support of a more productive and healthy local food economy.
Environmental Advisory Board member Anya Gordon facilitated a discussion of panelists from the local urban agriculture movement. The panelists included Council Member Bonner Gaylord, Erin White (Community Food Lab), Sara Merz (Advocates for Health in Action), Jill Statton Bullard (Inter-faith Food Shuttle) and Alexis Trost (Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation). The panel discussion and written comments focused on what the City could do to promote urban agriculture; how local citizens engage with local leadership; ideas for possible pilot programs; what other cities are doing; and actively sought guidance on how to escalate the urban agriculture conversation to the policy level.
