Construction to the temporary cofferdam for this project is complete and in place to help the City prepare for significant rain events and limit flooding in the construction area while the dam is being built. Construction for the lake's dam structure is nearly complete. The contractor is working on the core of the dam, which is made of clay. Next, construction will include forming the shell of the dam, which is made of sand, and adding riprap or rock on the slope of the dam. Dredging or excavation of the lake will take place this summer.

Albemarle Avenue will remain closed until construction is complete - Vehicle and foot traffic is not permitted in areas directly surrounding the bridge. Please use designated detours. Work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with no work scheduled on the weekend except in an emergency or with prior approval from the City.

If you have any questions about upcoming construction, contact Gilles Bellot, PE, at Gilles.Bellot@raleighnc.gov or 919-996-4001.

History

The City of Raleigh approved the rehabilitation of Lower Longview Lake as a Capital Improvement Program (CIP) project in 2008. In 2009, Albemarle Avenue was closed at the dam due to deterioration of the bridge superstructure, which has caused the bridge to be unsafe for vehicle traffic. Instead of approaching the project with a temporary repair to the bridge, City staff has established a more sustainable and long-lasting design. Albemarle Avenue will remain closed until the dam rehabilitation project is complete.
