Landlord Training

About 50 participants attended the October 2012 session of landlord training.

The City of Raleigh, in partnership with property managers and the legal community, has prepared a training course to help landlords enhance the quality of living on their properties. Rental property owners and managers, real estate agents, lawyers and others who deal with rental issues are encouraged to to attend its Landlord Training Program.

Each session holds a maximum of 50 participants

Advanced registration required. Registrations will not be accepted on the day of the class.

Cost and Continuing Education Credits

There is a registration fee for all participants. Registration for all general participants and real estate agents seeking NCREC credit hours is $30.00.

Real estate agents receive four credit hours from the North Carolina Real Estate Commission.

The Board of Continuing Legal Education has approved the Landlord Training class for CLE credit worth 4.0 hours. The registration fee for participants seeking CLE credit is $200.00.

Discussion topics

The class covers a variety of topics that are important to people who own or manage rental housing. They include:

  • Screening of rental applicants
  • Rental agreements
  • Legal steps to resolve problems
  • Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
  • Nuisance violations
  • The federal Housing Choice Voucher Program, known as Section 8
  • Role of the Police, Inspections and Community Engagement

Instruction is provided by the Police department, Inspections and Community Engagement divisions, City Attorney's Office, Triangle Apartment Association, Blue Ridge Properties Corporation, Raleigh Housing Authority and Hatch, Little & Bunn LLP.


Dena Daniels, who manages a large apartment complex in Raleigh, says the class is worthwhile for every property manager. "If you are anyone from a newbie to an experienced person, this one-day class is a good investment for your dollars," she says.

Janet Howard, who owns several duplexes in southeast Raleigh, is among those who have benefited from the class. "It was more engaging than I had anticipated," she says. "It's informative, and I like the fact that it highlights the important parts" of managing property.

Debra Hyson, rental housing owner and manager, says the class increased her awareness. "I would strongly recommend any landlord or property owner who has never taken it to take the landlord training at least once, even it is just for the information that is given out," Hyson says.
