An Electric Vehicle (EV) is an automobile that is powered entirely or partially by electricity. Electric vehicles hold great promise for reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere is also reduced because electric power is the primary fuel source instead of fossil fuel.

What is CO2?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a heavy odorless gas formed during respiration and by the combustion or decomposition of organic substances; it is absorbed from the air by plants in photosynthesis. CO2 is a greenhouse gas and is emitted into the air through many of the things we use every day.

The City of Raleigh has partnered with Charlotte, NC based, Activelogix to develop a web based dashboard system called Periscope so that the City and public can monitor and view the electric vehicle charging stations in real time. Through this Periscope system the community will be able to:

  • View what stations are open or being used
  • How often they are being used
  • How long they are being used

This will help the City better understand the utilization of these charging stations so they can better develop the areas that have more use.
