Current Activity

Posted Tuesday, Oct. 2

This project is part of the North Ridge Phase IV and V storm drainage improvement and stream stabilization project. The design consultant, Brown and Caldwell, Inc., has surveyed cross sections of the stream in the project area and are finalizing the design plans, which should be finished this fall.

Required permits for this project have been received from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality and the US Army Corp of Engineers. Brown and Caldwell, Inc. is in the process of getting necessary permits from the City of Raleigh.

The project also requires the City to receive real estate easements from specific properties that are in the project area. These residents have been notified. Prep work for surveying easement areas is taking place in October.

All necessary easements, permits, and private utility relocations will need to take place before construction can begin.

If you have questions about this project or the easement acquisition process, contact Carrie Mitchell, PE, at 919-996-4068 or Carrie.Mitchell@raleighnc.gov.

Summary

This project includes a series of system-wide improvements throughout the North Ridge community.

Project design for Lower Audubon includes replacing the existing 36-inch pipe under Audubon Drive with a 42- and 54-inch pipes near 7708 Audubon Drive. Double storm drains also will be installed along Audubon Drive to increase the infrastructure's ability to handle stormwater flows. The drainage outlet on Audubon Drive will be replaced and connected to the neighborhood stream to prevent erosion.

The goal of the project is to reduce the potential for flooding by providing a 10-year level of service on Audubon Drive and surrounding areas. This means that the street will not overtop in a storm event that has a one in 10 chance of occurring.

History

This project is located along a stream near North Ridge Country Club Lake within the North Ridge community. It is located in the Perry Creek Watershed. A history of flooding events in the area resulted in public meetings in April and June 2006. An engineering study was completed in December 2006. The engineering study recommended improvements to the existing undersized storm drainage system. Phases one through three have been completed.
