Solar Thermal energy harnesses solar power for thermal energy, heating water. The City of Raleigh has embraced this technology, promoting its use at several Fire Stations and municipal facilities. This not only addresses the City's sustainability goals, it also reduces energy costs. This is one strategy to become a more energy-efficient and resilient City.

Fire Stations with Solar Thermal

Solar thermal hot water heating systems supplement natural gas units at some of the City's Fire Stations. Installed solar collectors on top of the stations' roofs provide hot water for station needs. These solar thermal installations have been an efficient, effective solution to reduce energy consumption.

The solar thermal panels at the Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center help offset the facility's hot water needs. They also work symbiotically with the green roof installation, providing shade for plants.

City of Raleigh Municipal Building

Municipal Building contains a roof top solar panel

In 1985, the City of Raleigh installed a solar thermal system on the roof of the Municipal Building located at 222 West Hargett Street. This system still produces hot water for City government's downtown administration building, proving the technology's efficiency and long life.
