  • Constructed in 1956 with the aid of the Army Corps of Engineers, Lake Wheeler once served as Raleigh's secondary auxiliary water supply lake.
  • Beginning in 2010, Lake Wheeler was reinstated as a primary water supply for Raleigh and surrounding Wake County communities and feeds water to the Dempsey Benton Water Treatment Plant.
  • Lake Wheeler Park is CLOSED on Mondays starting in October. The park will reopen on Mondays starting in April (7 days a week).

Park Office

Park Office/Concessions

  • Visit us at the park office and inquire about the various amenities we have to offer. Come out and rent a boat, pay to launch your personal boat, and ask about our fishing rod and reel loaner program.
  • Lake Wheeler has a small concession stand to purchase a drink or grab a snack while you are out enjoying the park.
  • Park is open daily from dawn to dusk (closed on Mondays from October – March)

  • Pets must be restrained on a leash at all times with in the park.
  • Swimming and/or wading is not allowed.
  • No alcohol of any kind.
  • Smoking is only permitted in designated parking lots.

Boat Rentals

  • Jon Boats (no motor): $4/hour, $20/day
  • Rowboats (no motor): $4/hour, $20/day
  • Canoes: $5/hour
  • Kayaks (single or double): $5/hour
  • Pedal Boats: $6/half hour
  • Spring Season: April 20-May 1, Friday through Sunday 9am-4pm. Jonboats, Rowboats, Pedal Boats ONLY.
  • Summer Season: May 1-September 30, Monday-Sunday, 9am-6pm. All Boats.
  • Fall Season: October 5-14, Friday-Sunday, 9am-4pm. Jonboats, Rowboats, Pedal Boats ONLY.

  • You must be over the age of 18 to rent boats, and over the age of 16 to independently operate a rental boat.
  • All rental boats are subject to weather conditions including thunderstorms, wind speeds, and extreme temperatures.
  • Please call ahead to determine any weather conditions for the day.

Boat Launches

  • Boats (trailered and non-trailered) are allowed to launch into Lake Wheeler with the purchase of a daily or annual launch pass.
  • Motorized boats are allowed with the exception of Personal Water Crafts (PWC), a term used for “Jet Ski” type boats.
  • Watersport activities such as skiing and tubing are allowed, however the act of swimming is not.

  • Non Residents: $6/day
  • Senior (age 62) and/or veteran: $2/day

  • All boats must travel in a counter clockwise pattern.
  • Speed limit is 40 mph on the lake.
  • No swimming from personal boats.
  • Adhere to all No Wake markers found on body of Lake Wheeler.
  • No Wake hours are in affect for the entire lake on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays until 11am.

  • Non Resident: $4/day | $80/year
  • Senior (age 62) or veteran: $2/day | $25/year
  • Children (under 12): No Charge
  • Fishing is permitted in Lake Wheeler and Simpkins Pond with the purchase of a Lake Wheeler fishing permit and is only required if you are fishing on foot.
  • Fishing is allowed on the 2 designated piers and on the shoreline of Simpkins Pond only.
  • Stop by the park office to purchase a fishing permit and find out about the Rod and Reel Tackle Loaner program.

Conference Room

  • 25' x 40'
  • Capacity: 75 seated
  • Kitchenette includes refrigerator/freezer, sink, ice machine and microwave.
  • Rental includes the use of 7 rectangular shaped folding tables (6’x2.5’) and 75 folding metal chairs. Set up and clean up are renter's responsibility.
  • 22’ x 22’ Covered Verandah features rocking chairs overlooking scenic Lake Wheeler (requires conference room rental).
  • 40’ x 48’ spacious Deck features picnic tables and benches with a beautiful view of Lake Wheeler (requires conference room and verandah rental).
  • $75/hour (2hr minimum) - $15 application fee and $100 refundable deposit.
  • With verandah - $105/hr
  • With verandah and deck - $135/hr
  • Indoor rental facilities are allowed after park hours up to 11 pm. Additional $40/hour after hours fees apply.
  • Alcohol permits are required for Conference room rentals. Permits cover beer and wine only. Must be applied for a minimum of 3 weeks in advance of rental and require a $50 nonrefundable fee.
