Residents Have Favorable View of Most City Services

The results of a recent community survey indicate that Raleigh residents have positive perceptions about many aspects of City services, including police and fire services, the quality of customer service provided, cleanliness of City parks, and the overall image of their City. The survey is part of the City’s continued efforts to understand the community’s satisfaction with, and perception of, service delivery.

“Raleigh has a reputation as a great place to live and work,” said Mayor Nancy McFarlane. “This survey confirms what Council Members and I hear frequently in the community, that people are pleased with the overall quality of life, City services, and the employees who deliver them.”

Most notably, 90 percent of respondents who expressed an opinion rated the overall quality of life in Raleigh as excellent or good, compared to a national average of 71 percent for large cities. Raleigh’s rating represents a slight increase from 2016. Raleigh rated the same as or above the national average in 34 of the 37 comparative topic areas assessed, including:

  • 89 percent rated Raleigh as an excellent or good place to live, compared to the national average of 52 percent;

  • 69 percent rated the overall direction the City of Raleigh is taking as excellent or good, compared to the national average of 41 percent; and

  • 75 percent rated the overall quality of services provided by the City as excellent or good, compared to the national average of 44 percent.

The independent research firm ETC Institute recently conducted the survey, which was sent to more than 1,000 randomly selected households. It provides a +/-3.1 percent margin of error at the 95 percent level of confidence for overall survey results.

The complete survey results are published on the City’s Budget and Management Services page under the Strategic Planning section.
