Albemarle Ave. Reopened Jan. 7 After a $3.4 Million Dam Repair
Albemarle Avenue in east Raleigh reopened on Jan. 7 following a $3.4 million stormwater project in the neighborhood. The road was closed in 2009 after the bridge over the lake deteriorated and was unsafe to travel.
The portion of Lower Longview Lake’s dam on Albemarle Avenue now meets North Carolina Dam Safety standards. The project also added a new emergency spillway structure that improves the flow of water going through the lake during large storms. This new structure allows the City to lower the lake’s water level more easily prior to a storm, which reduces the potential for flooding downstream.
Residents may still see construction crews dredging a portion of the upper lake. This work is expected to be finished this month. The lake also will remain drained until the City gets approval from North Carolina Dam Safety to refill it.
