City of Raleigh to Replace Stormwater Pipe on Lake Wheeler Road

New Traffic Pattern in Place Until Further Notice

[Alert]News posted Oct. 15, 2018 - 6:00 am

here is a new traffic pattern in place on Lake Wheeler Road between Centennial Parkway and Maywood Avenue due to the condition of a stormwater culvert/pipe in this area. The deteriorating pipe is beginning to fail and caused a sinkhole at the Centennial Parkway intersection. The City initially closed the Maywood Avenue intersection and adjusted traffic patterns as a precautionary measure given concerns with roadway safety. A lane closure will be in place as the City continues to plan for this project. A full road closure will take place during construction, which is tentatively expected to begin in January 2019.
City staff will deconstruct, remove, and replace the 72-inch diameter stormwater pipe that runs underneath Lake Wheeler Road. Then, work will begin to repair the road. Construction is expected to take three months to complete.
The following traffic pattern will be in place until further notice:
Lake Wheeler Road is open but restricted to one lane for northeast-bound traffic from Centennial Parkway to Maywood Avenue; and,
Both lanes are open for southwest-bound traffic.
The intersection at Maywood Avenue is no longer closed. The new lane closure should not impact traffic or businesses on Maywood Avenue.
The City of Raleigh is working as quickly and efficiently as possible to complete this project. Weather conditions and unexpected construction delays may shift the anticipated schedule.
