City to Launch Fourth of July Fireworks in West Raleigh
To improve the overall viewing experience, the City of Raleigh will present Independence Day fireworks in the PNC Arena area on July 4. The annual fireworks display, which has been launched Downtown since 2012, is moving back to the fairgrounds-area location and expected to surpass previous displays in terms of size.
The decision to change the location of the fireworks was in large part due to the changing skyline caused by construction and equipment in Downtown Raleigh. Over the past six years, the Downtown fireworks were launched from two separate locations depending on their size, causing some visitors to see one display and not the other. Furthermore, the nature of a short, time-limited event placed considerable stress on the Downtown street grid, resulting in congestion that limited access and contributed to significant traffic delays following the fireworks display.
This year, all fireworks will be launched from the Varsity Lot at North Carolina State University, which is adjacent to PNC Arena, Carter-Finley Stadium, and the N.C. State Fairgrounds. There are no major visual obstructions in the vicinity so the fireworks can be viewed from all directions. The arena also provides ample parking and restroom amenities.
PNC Arena will open gates at 6 p.m. and fireworks are scheduled to launch at 9:30 p.m. Parking at PNC Arena will be free and open to the public. Raleigh police officers will be on hand to assist with traffic control and help maintain a family-friendly atmosphere. In the event of inclement weather on July 4, the event will be moved to July 5.
Other local events scheduled for Independence Day include the Keep RLGH Independent 4 Miler at Dorothea Dix Park, 4th of July Day Party in Downtown, a concert featuring the Barenaked Ladies at Red Hat Amphitheater, and the annual 4th of July Celebration at the State Capitol grounds.
