Top 5 Things for Kids to Do Indoors with Raleigh Parks
Is the winter weather leaving you stir-crazy? When it’s too cold or rainy to play outside, but your kids need to burn off some energy, check out these indoor activities with Raleigh Parks!
1. Explore the Great Outdoors….Inside
Walnut Creek Wetland Center
950 Peterson Street
Raleigh, NC 27610
Walnut Creek Wetland Center has an extensive library of nature books for kids and adults. Each month, Walnut Creek has a theme with related activities and crafts. In February, Walnut Creek has a “groundhog burrow” that kids can crawl through. Kids can dig through the log hotel to find beetles, roly-polys, or millipedes. Kids can meet Pudge, the tree frog with no eyes, Mr. T the box turtle, and Electra and Norm, Walnut Creek's snakes. Staff can take out snakes petting! There are also puzzles and games for toddlers and adults.
Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD Nature Preserve
5229 Awls Haven Drive
Raleigh, NC 27614
Visit the park office at Annie Louise Wilkerson Nature Preserve to explore nature indoors through the hands-on displays and craft table. Learn about the local wildlife through lifelike puppets, kind furs, and models of animal skulls and feet. Meet Cornelius the friendly corn snake and examine snake skins and models. Squeeze an Audubon bird to hear the bird’s special song or play dozens of bird calls with the Identiflyer. Use binoculars to look out the windows and help count the birds at the feeders. Examine real bugs and models of bugs, or put together a giant floor puzzle of bugs. View and touch our collections of tree leaves, rocks, turtle shells and more. If you like arts and crafts, you can make a free nature craft at the craft table. The park office has plenty of wildlife coloring pages to color and nature books to read. Best of all, there is always a naturalist at the front desk who can guide your explorations and answer your questions.
