Take A Child Outside (TACO) Week Events, Sept. 24-30

The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources invites you to join our celebration of Take a Child Outside (TACO) Week!

As part of Take a Child Outside (TACO) Week, the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources will be hosting a fun-filled week of outdoor activities. This annual event encourages children and families across the country to get outside, explore, and learn more about the local environment. What will you discover about yourself or your backyard? Join our special programs to learn, play and spend time together in the wonderful outdoors.

All events for TACO Week are FREE except for Outdoor Cooking and Durant Family Campout. You can register for any of these events online using RecLink. Courses can be found easily in RecLink by searching the unique course "registration barcode" listed below.

Wetland Explorers
Walnut Creek Wetland Center
What is a wetland? Who lives there? Let’s go find out! In this TACO week family program, we will go exploring. We’ll use nets to see what we can find in the creek, look under cover boards and logs, and use binoculars to see what might be living high in the trees. All ages are welcome, but the program is designed for ages 5 and older. Please come dressed to be outdoors (and being in the creek can get a little messy! You might want to bring a change of clothes!) Wear your own rain boots or borrow a pair of ours (toddler size 6 to Adult Men’s 14). Please register at least 4 days in advance. Parents/Caregivers are expected to accompany children. One session per person, please!

Wee Walkers Afternoon
Durant Nature Preserve
Join us for a special afternoon edition of our monthly nature stroll as we celebrate TACO Week. This is a great opportunity for adults and little ones to explore what’s happening in nature. Preregistration is not required but is helpful for planning purposes. This program takes place on trails that may not be accessible by strollers.

Magical Monarchs
Durant Nature Preserve
Meet the monarchs, our most famous butterflies as they journey south for the winter. We’ll learn about the monarchs’ long migration and what they like to eat, make a craft fit for the king of butterflies, and search for flying visitors in our Monarch Garden. Preregistration is required. Children must be accompanied by adults.

Junior Kids Fishing
Lake Johnson Park
This program is for younger children who have never fished before but would like to try. We will practice with some casting games and then spend some time fishing in the lake. Your child will leave with stickers and fishing themed coloring pages. We will teach them that fishing is fun, join us today. Adult(s) must accompany child(ren), adult(s) do not need to register. Advance registration is required for this program.

Paws and Claws!
Little ones will have fun learning all about animal feet with this program featuring Stan Tekiela’s book Paws and Claws. Games, songs, and live creatures will bring this program to life. Guided Nature Walks
Forest Ridge Park
Get outside and explore the trails at Forest Ridge Park. Join one of our experienced naturalist to gain information on flora, fauna, or just enjoy walking as part of a group. These walks are designed for the whole family. Routes and topics will be tailored to accommodate the group. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. Pre-registration is recommended although not required.

Celebrate the arrival of Autumn at the Preserve with an afternoon of arts and time spent outdoors. Chimney Swifts

Join us as we celebrate the migratory chimney swifts and learn why their future is threatened. Durant Family Campout
Durant Nature Preserve
Families gather for an overnight campout at Durant. We’ll cook dinner at the campfire, stargaze, and go for a night hike. In the morning, wake up with the birds, enjoy a camp breakfast, and have time for morning exploring. Bring a tent if you have one or borrow one of ours. We’ll haul your gear by vehicle down to the primitive campsite that we will call home for the night. Preregistration is required at least four days prior to the program.

Nocturnal Nature

Join us for this fun full moon trek through the woods. We will call for owls and nightjars, look for evidence of mammals and identify singing amphibians. Participants should dress for the weather in comfortable clothing and closed-toed shoes that can get messy. Be sure to bring a flashlight. We will provide red cellophane to cover the lights. Adults must accompany children. Adults and children must register.
