Visiting Durant has something for the whole family! Hike our trails, build a fairy house, or learn something new in one of our nature programs.
Frog Song Campfire and Marshmallow Roast
Gather ‘round the campfire as we listen to the songs of spring. We’ll learn about the frogs that make Durant Nature Preserve their home as we roast a marshmallow around the campfire circle. Advance registration is required for this program. Adults must accompany children. Adults and children must register and pay the program fee.

Would you and your toddler like some company for your walks? Join others on an easy-paced hike around the park. This is a great opportunity for adults and little ones to meet each other and explore what’s happening in nature. Advance registration is not required but is helpful for planning purposes. Adults must accompany children.

Nature and Sensory Play Day – Spring
Check out Durant’s Sensory and Nature Play Garden! Self-guided activities delight the senses and encourage nature play. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Walk-in registration is on a firstcome, first-served basis. If the garden is full when you arrive, staff will be happy to point out other areas of interest to visit until a spot opens up.

Story and a Craft: Fawns
Spring is upon us, and fawns will soon be born. We’ll read a story about a fawn in the woods and then go on a hike to look for signs of spring. After the hike, we’ll make a fawn craft to take home. Advance registration is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Adults attend free.

Can a toad give you warts? What does a toad sound like? What kinds of toads live in our area and how can we identify them? Find out the answers to these questions and lots more as we search for toads in the preserve. Each participant will make a lovely toad abode to take home to attract toads to their backyard! Advance registration is required. Adults must accompany children. Adults and children must register and pay the program fee.

Earth Day Hike
Join us on Earth Day for an easy-paced nature hike through the woods. We will walk for about a mile and a half, stopping occasionally to point out interesting things along the trail. Advance registration is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Spring Has Sprung Wild Flower Walk
Let’s go hiking to see what’s up and blooming in the park! Bloodroots, spring beauties ... who knows? This adult- oriented walk meets at the north entrance of the Durant Nature Preserve Office. Advance registration is required.

Spend a relaxing afternoon around a campfire learning new recipes and cooking techniques that can be done over a fire. Bring a chair and your appetite for this unique and informative program that is sure to inspire you to use these fun outdoor cooking methods at your next campout! Advance registration is required.

Environmental Education / Continuing Ed – Spring Bird ID
Practice your bird identification skills by joining State Park Ranger Education and Interpretation Specialist Brian Bockhahn for a bird identification workshop at beautiful Durant Nature Preserve. After a brief introduction on bird biology and identification tips, we’ll spend the majority of our time in the field listening and looking for our spring migratory birds. Please bring binoculars if you have them. This workshop will count toward criteria II requirements of the N.C. Environmental Education Certification program. Advance registration is required.

Environmental Education / Continuing Ed – NestWatch
We’ll collect data from our bluebird boxes for NestWatch, investigate the different species of birds that use our nest boxes and see nests and eggs up close. We’ll send you home with all the information you need to start collecting data. This program will count toward criteria II requirements of the N.C. Environmental Education Certification program. Advance registration is required.
