Preschool and Family Programs at Durant Nature Preserve
Visiting Durant has something for the whole family! Hike our trails, build a fairy house, or learn something new in one of our nature programs.

Nature and Sensory Play Day – Spring
Check out Durant’s Sensory and Nature Play Garden! Self-guided activities delight the senses and encourage nature play. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Walk-in registration is on a firstcome, first-served basis. If the garden is full when you arrive, staff will be happy to point out other areas of interest to visit until a spot opens up.

Friday, April 13 - 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

All ages are welcome. There is no charge.

Story and a Craft: Fawns
Spring is upon us, and fawns will soon be born. We’ll read a story about a fawn in the woods and then go on a hike to look for signs of spring. After the hike, we’ll make a fawn craft to take home. Advance registration is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Adults attend free.

Tuesday, April 17 - 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Age: Three to five years. $2 per child.

Toad Abodes
Can a toad give you warts? What does a toad sound like? What kinds of toads live in our area and how can we identify them? Find out the answers to these questions and lots more as we search for toads in the preserve. Each participant will make a lovely toad abode to take home to attract toads to their backyard! Advance registration is required. Adults must accompany children. Adults and children must register and pay the program fee.

Saturday, April 21 - 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Age: 5 years and up. $6 per person.

Earth Day Hike
Join us on Earth Day for an easy-paced nature hike through the woods. We will walk for about a mile and a half, stopping occasionally to point out interesting things along the trail. Advance registration is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Sunday, April 22 - 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Age: 5 years and up. There is no charge

Mark Your Calendars for Sample Durant – May 5 10am-2pm
Join us for a free event at Durant Nature Preserve. This is a chance to sample all the preserve has to offer. Catch it all in one day: critter stop, bird watching, crafts, nature scavenger hunt, dip-netting, canoeing and fishing!

Look for the registration table at the north entrance next to the Preserve office. Pre-registration is not required but is helpful for planning purposes. Children must be accompanied by adults.

Adult Nature Programs at Durant

Outdoor Cooking
Spend a relaxing afternoon around a campfire learning new recipes and cooking techniques that can be done over a fire. Bring a chair and your appetite for this unique and informative program that is sure to inspire you to use these fun outdoor cooking methods at your next campout! Advance registration is required.

Saturday, April 7 - 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Wise Walkers
Enjoy the beauty of nature in the company of friends on this easy paced guided nature walk. A staff member will walk with you to point out interesting natural phenomenon along the path. Advance registration is required for this program.

Environmental Education / Continuing Ed – Spring Bird ID
Practice your bird identification skills by joining State Park Ranger Education and Interpretation Specialist Brian Bockhahn for a bird identification workshop at beautiful Durant Nature Preserve. After a brief introduction on bird biology and identification tips, we’ll spend the majority of our time in the field listening and looking for our spring migratory birds. Please bring binoculars if you have them. This workshop will count toward criteria II requirements of the N.C. Environmental Education Certification program. Advance registration is required.

Environmental Education / Continuing Ed – NestWatch
We’ll collect data from our bluebird boxes for NestWatch, investigate the different species of birds that use our nest boxes and see nests and eggs up close. We’ll send you home with all the information you need to start collecting data. This program will count toward criteria II requirements of the N.C. Environmental Education Certification program. Advance registration is required.

Friday, April 27 - 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
