Current Activity

Posted Tuesday, Dec. 4

This project is almost complete. The contractor finished constructing the dam and rebuilding the road that goes over the dam. Additional work was required following a water main break in the area on Oct. 23. Those repairs, which are expected to be done this week, include:

  • repairing and repaving part of the road; and,
  • Adding riprap (rock material) to protect the stream at the outlet of the box culvert.

The final walkthrough for the project will take place the week of Dec. 10. Also, partial dredging of the two reservoirs in the lake is underway and is expected to be finished in mid-December.

Albemarle Avenue will remain closed until construction is complete - vehicle and foot traffic is not permitted in areas directly surrounding the bridge. Please use designated detours. Work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with no work scheduled on the weekend except in an emergency or with prior approval from the City.

If you have any questions about upcoming construction, contact Gilles Bellot, PE, at Gilles.Bellot@raleighnc.gov or 919-996-4001.

History

The City of Raleigh approved the rehabilitation of Lower Longview Lake as a Capital Improvement Program (CIP) project in 2008. In 2009, Albemarle Avenue was closed at the dam due to deterioration of the bridge superstructure, which has caused the bridge to be unsafe for vehicle traffic. Instead of approaching the project with a temporary repair to the bridge, City staff has established a more sustainable and long-lasting design. Albemarle Avenue will remain closed until the dam rehabilitation project is complete.
