The New Pullen Road Extension is Open!

The City’s contractor, Carolina Sunrock, opened the new Pullen Road extension to traffic on Sunday, Dec. 16. The new roadway creates direct access from Pullen Road to Centennial Campus.

The Pullen Road extension includes:

  • Bike lanes;
  • A multi-use path on the west side of the street;
  • A sidewalk on the east side of the street;
  • Street lights;
  • Street trees; and,
  • A roundabout at Bilyeu Street.

The new connection is expected to help reduce the amount of traffic congestion along Avent Ferry Road, Western Boulevard, and Nazareth Street.

The project began construction in the fall of 2017, as part of a three-party agreement with North Carolina State University and the Catholic Diocese of North Carolina. The City paid $3.8 million, with the university and the diocese splitting the difference.

As part of the project, the City closed the entrance to Bilyeu Street from Western Boulevard, reconfiguring it for pedestrians and cyclists as part of the Rocky Branch Greenway Trail.

This project will extend Pullen Road from Western Boulevard to Centennial Parkway as a 52-foot from back-of-curb to back-of-curb roadway with:

  • Bike lanes;
  • Medians;
  • A six-foot sidewalk on the east side;
  • A 10-foot multi-use path on the west side;
  • Street trees and street lights on both sides; and,
  • 12-inch water main installation.

The City developed a three-party agreement with North Carolina State University and the Catholic Diocese of North Carolina for the purpose of extending Pullen Road from Western Boulevard to Centennial Parkway. This street extension is consistent with the City’s 2030 Comprehensive Plan and will help improve safety and congestion along Western Boulevard. The project proposes to construct a three-lane curb and gutter section with medians, sidewalks, bike lanes, street trees, and street lights. Upon completion, street improvements would be maintained by the City.
