Fire Academy Applicant Requirements Two Fire Academy Opportunities Ready to Begin Your Fire Service Journey?

The Raleigh Fire Department is preparing to welcome its next generation of firefighters, with applications for Fire Academies 59 and 60 opening July 1, 2026. These academies offer a pathway into a meaningful career dedicated to service, teamwork, and protecting the Raleigh community. Individuals interested in serving their community and building a rewarding career in the fire service are encouraged to apply by July 31, 2026.

Becoming a firefighter with the City of Raleigh is a competitive process that attracts candidates from diverse backgrounds and experiences across North Carolina and the United States.

As one of North Carolina’s leading and most progressive fire departments, Raleigh Fire provides career stability, competitive pay, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities for long term growth. The newly adopted firefighter salary is $57,677 and will take effect in the fall.

Fire Academy Applicant Requirements

No previous firefighting experience is required. Applicants must:

  • Be 18 or older by 11:59 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2026;
  • Provide proof of a high school diploma or equivalent credential;
  • Have corrected vision of at least 20/30 in both eyes;
  • Hold a valid driver's license; and,
  • Meet the physical and mental demands of the position.

Two Fire Academy Opportunities

Academy 59 is scheduled to begin in March 2027. It’s designed for applicants who already possess one of the following certifications:

  • North Carolina EMT certification;
  • National Registry EMT (NR-EMT) certification; and,
  • Equivalent EMT certification from another state.

Academy 60 is scheduled to begin in May 2027. It’s open to applicants who do not currently hold any certifications. Candidates selected for Academy 60 will receive all the required training as part of the academy.
